The 1st Annual Loving Heart Picnic was held at the Elora Gorge Conservation Area in Elora on Saturday, July 5, 2003 from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. in celebration of the Agency's new adoptive families, parents in-waiting and those yet to be united. 40 adults and 7 children enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of mingling, activities and developing friendships!

Attendees included people that were interested in the Bulgarian program to those who had already brought home their children and they traveled from as far away as Windsor, Sarnia, Dundas and the Toronto area. Program Director, Elena Georgiev, had brought with her some traditional Bulgarian bread and the accompanying salt and cheese that one traditionally eats. It is customary to take a piece of this loaf as a symbol of friendship.

After playing and ice-breaker game so everyone could introduce themselves plus learn a little about Bulgaria, everyone was having a wonderful time sharing adoption stories and photos. As the day progressed, barbecues were on and picnic baskets were opened.

The children were entertained with bubble blowing and a barrel that dispersed candy. But as with all young children, simple things seem to provide the most amusement and the picnic was no exception. The water tap seemed to provide the most entertainment and needless to say a little more mess for the Mommies and Daddies!

Elena also provided an informative update as to the changes that were taking placing in Bulgaria later in the afternoon. This was very valuable given all the amendments that are currently occurring in the Bulgarian legislation regarding international adoption.

The weather was glorious despite some showers later in the day but that didn't put a damper on the festivities. The day seemed to fly by and everyone had rave reviews about the day. It provided many special moments for those who already knew one another and many new friendships were made as well.

Based on the evaluations that were completed, many felt that it was very important to get together as a support "family" and continue these gatherings on a regular basis throughout the year and annually. While plans have not been confirmed at this time, several Loving Heart families have suggested that the next get-together be to celebrate the holiday season and the New Year. Once details have been arranged, everyone will be notified and hopefully we will have a great turnout once again!

As the afternoon came to a close, several families went back to the Simpson's campfire to enjoy some baked potatoes, kabapche and toasted marshmallows! Nikola even serenaded us with some excellent campfire songs! A perfect ending to a perfect day!
